Animal Crossing: New Horizons will have a new major update after all!

Two years after Nintendo claimed that version 2.0 would be the final update, Animal Crossing: New Horizons will drop version 3.0 on January 15, 2026 with new content, sandbox co-op, improved quality of life, and its Switch 2 edition. The Switch 2 edition will be an optional paid update with exclusive changes, but the free update will apply to all editions.

Free update highlights:

1. Slumber Island- new island that you access in your dreams, similar to a sandbox mode. With an NSO subscription, you can build on the island together with friends. And three islands can be saved per player. I know someone will be excited about the co-op feature. Three island slots are featured but we'll have to see if these are saved on the cloud or dependent on the local system. It will most likely be three slots per Nintendo account.
2. New content: the Resort Hotel featuring Kapp'n's family. Bring guests and decorate guest rooms. New furniture and clothing available from its souvenir shop. It's like the free version of Happy Home Paradise.
3. QoL update: Storage size increased 5000 to 9000, and you can store more item types such as shrubs, trees, and flowers.
4. New content: there are many new items and collaborative items to buy and collect.
5. There will also be 4 new villagers to via Zelda and Splatoon Amiibos.
6. Resetti returns and offers new service to clean up your island. Cleanup size can be small blocks of coverage or the whole island.
7. QoL update: ability to craft multiple items.
8. New gameplay: You can play classic Nintendo games when interacting with in-game Nintendo consoles such as the Famicom or NES; provided that you have an active Nintendo Online subscription. They brought back the nostalgia to play NES games during Animal Crossing: Population Growing for the GameCube.

Ice Climber!
9. QoL update: Resetti, a returning Animal Crossing character, will now offer clearing services on your island if you want to clear out a location. For example, players can clear a large block on the island, the beach, or the whole island which I think would place the items back to your storage. I would be cautious and use this carefully.

The Switch 2 edition:

1. The Switch 2 edition will be an optional upgrade pack which costs $6.99 in Canada. Of course it will also be sold as a separate title to non ACNH owners.
2. The Switch 2 will have an increased graphic resolution but will NOT run at 60fps. Although both S1 and S2 editions will have faster load times, steady frames, and less instances of item pop-ins if running on the Switch 2.
3. New item: players can call out villager with the Megaphone and uses the Switch 2's built-in microphone. When player calls a villager name on the mic, there will be a speech bubble indicating the villager's direction.
4. QoL update: players can use the Switch 2 joy-con as a mouse to decorate homes, design patterns, or draw on the bulletin board.
5. Increased visitor limit to 12 in addition to hovering webcam portraits if the player has a webcam.

I haven't seen it in the promo about one feature that should have been among the QoL improvement. And that is to be able to exchange points for multiple items from the Nook Stop. I mean it takes forever just to buy 10 Nook Miles Ticket.

For now, I stave off from purchasing the upgrade my Animal Crossing: New Horizons to the Switch 2 edition as there isn't an urgent need to upgrade.
